WARSAW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid homage at the Kolhapur memorial in Warsaw, Poland. In a post on X, PM Modi wrote that the memorial is a tribute to the grand royal family of Kolhapur, which was at the forefront of providing shelter to Polish women and children displaced due to the horrors of World War II.

“We pay homage at the Kolhapur Memorial in Warsaw. This Memorial is a tribute to the great Royal Family of Kolhapur. This Royal Family was at the forefront of providing shelter to Polish women and children displaced due to the horrors of World War II,” PM Modi wrote in X. “Inspired by the ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Royal Family of Kolhapur put humanity above all else and ensured a dignified life for Polish women and children. This act of compassion will continue to inspire generations,” his post added.

Meanwhile, in a post on X, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “Prime Minister Narendramodi paid homage at the Kolhapur Memorial in Warsaw today. The memorial honours the generosity of the state of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, which had given refuge to Polish women and children during World War II. It continues to shine a light on the deep and enduring friendship and bond between India and Poland.”

Earlier in the day, PM Modi also visited the Jam Saheb memorial in Nawanagar. In a post on X, he said, “Humanity and compassion are vital foundations of a just and peaceful world. The Jam Saheb memorial in Nawanagar in Warsaw highlights the humanitarian contribution of Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja, who ensured shelter and care for Polish children made homeless due to World War II. Jam Saheb is fondly remembered in Poland as Dobry Maharaja. He paid homage at the memorial. Here are some excerpts.”

In an interview with X, Jaiswal said, “Prime Minister @narendramodi paid a solemn tribute at the Battle of Monte Cassino memorial in Warsaw. The PM honoured the brave soldiers who fought in World War II. Indian and Polish troops fought side by side in this historic battle. Our shared history and enduring bonds remain a source of inspiration.”

It is noteworthy that PM Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to pay his respects at the Bom Maharaja Square, Monte Cassino Memorial and Kolhapur Family Memorial. PM Modi arrived in Poland on Wednesday on the first leg of his two-nation visit.
