Pro-Palestine protesters disrupted a Democratic After Party On Wednesday in Harlem, Manhattan, New York Democrats held the event for the Harris-Walz ticket. The event was held a week before the state’s Democratic leaders held a pep rally-like launch party for the Harris-Walz ticket ahead of next week’s Democratic National Convention (DNC), where electors will formally show their support for Vice President Kamala Harris.
While neither Harris nor Walz were present at the Harlem event on Wednesday, Mayor Eric Adams, Gov. Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James and others were on hand. Adams and Hochul were among those who addressed the crowd, projecting the possibility of the first black female president of the U.S.
Other prominent Democrats who attended the event included City Council members Pierina Sanchez, Shaun Abreu, Keith Powers, Julie Menin, Gale Brewer and Diana Ayala. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, Assembly members Yudelka Tapia and David Weprin were also present.
Protesters set off smoke bombs and created chaos at the restaurant where the party was being held. The New York Police Department has made multiple arrests. Videos circulating on social media show protesters clashing with law enforcement outside the restaurant. Authorities are reportedly working to clear the area. Details about the party-goers are not yet known.
Even before the event, a large group gathered behind barricades and chanted slogans against President Joe Biden’s support for Israel in its war against Hamas.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump held a rally in Asheville, North Carolina, on Wednesday. The 78-year-old spoke about his economic agenda and criticized the Biden-Harris administration for rising inflation.
