Qualcomm layoffs: Chipmaker Qualcomm is set to lay off more than 200 workers in the United States later this year. According to a notice posted by Qualcomm under California’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, the company will lay off at least 226 San Diego employees this year, with the layoffs taking effect on November 12, 2024.
According to media reports, the layoffs will affect employees at all 16 of Qualcomm’s facilities in San Diego, including the company’s headquarters. The layoffs are also likely to affect the company’s cybersecurity team, which is based in San Diego. However, the chipmaker has not confirmed all the departments that will be affected by the layoffs.
“As part of the normal course of our business, we prioritize and align our investments, resources and talent to ensure we are optimally positioned to take advantage of the unprecedented diversification opportunities before us,” Qualcomm said in a statement to TechCrunch.
Qualcomm layoffs in the past
It should be noted that this is not the first time Qualcomm has laid off employees in recent times. The company laid off over 1,200 workers across the company last year as part of its broader cost-cutting measure. Prior to that, the company had eliminated around 153 jobs at its San Diego office in 2022.
More layoffs in the technology sector in 2024
It is worth noting that Qualcomm is not the only tech company that has decided to lay off employees in recent times. Earlier this month, Microsoft laid off around 650 employees from its gaming division. The company had announced that it would lay off around 1,900 employees from its gaming division in January this year. These layoffs come in the wake of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
More recently, Cisco announced its second round of layoffs earlier this week. The company eliminated around 5,600 jobs, representing around seven percent of its workforce. The company had reduced its workforce by 4,000 people in February of this year.
Similarly, Apple In August this year, the company cut around 100 jobs from its digital services group. The move affected employees from its Books and News teams.
