Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday (August 24) reiterated his “caste census” tone to slam the BJP-led Centre, claiming that he reviewed the “Miss India list” but no woman belonging to Dalit, tribal or OBC communities was mentioned. He claimed that “90 per cent of the people are not part of the system” which is why the opposition is demanding the caste census, which he termed as “a basis for policy formulation”. His comments came while addressing ‘Samvidhan Samman Sammelan’ in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Rahul Gandhi on “Miss India”

“…I checked the Miss India list to see if there was any Dalit or tribal woman in it, but there was no Dalit, tribal or OBC woman. Still, the media talks about dance, music, cricket, Bollywood, but they don’t talk about farmers and workers,” Rahul Gandhi said.

The Congress leader, who stressed in the Lok Sabha that when the Congress comes to power at the Centre, it will conduct the caste census, further said that only conducting the caste census will not be enough, it is also important to know about the distribution of wealth in the country.

“Ninety per cent of the people are not part of the system. They have the skills and talent, but they are not connected to the system. That is why we are demanding a caste census. BJP leaders say that an OBC section will be made after the caste census… We want the list of different communities. For us, the caste census is not just a census, it is a basis for policy formulation… It is not enough to conduct a caste census, it is also important to understand how wealth is distributed… It is also important to find out what is the share of OBCs, Dalits, workers in the bureaucracy, judiciary, media…” he said.

Rahul Gandhi: 50 percent limit on reservations to be removed

Rahul Gandhi reiterated that he “does not accept” the 50 per cent reservation cap set by the Supreme Court and once again vowed to scrap the cap.

“We will conduct a caste census and the 50 per cent limit on reservation will be removed, which I do not accept… First, we should have before us the data on the participation of different castes in various institutions… Talks on reservation are always going on, but they are never given a chance. ‘Later entry ho jati hai, main aapko guarantee de raha hun lateral entry mein 90% wala aapko koi nahi milega’…” he said.
