Rahul Gandhi vows to ’foil BJP conspiracies’ as govt rolls back UPSC lateral entry notification

UPSC lateral entry notification: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi welcomed UPSC revoking the lateral entry notification on Saturday. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said, “We will protect the Constitution and the reservation system at all costs.”

“We will foil conspiracies like the BJP’s ‘lateral entry’ at any cost,” Rahul Gandhi added.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday wrote to the UPSC chairman asking him to withdraw the notification for ‘lateral entry’ employment. The move comes after a notification was issued on Saturday to fill 45 posts in various ministries of the Indian government.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains dedicated to upholding the Constitution framed by BR Ambedkar by enforcing the principles of reservation in the UPSC lateral entrance.

Vaishnaw, the Railway Minister, stressed that the Modi government is committed to implementing lateral entry reservation principles to promote social justice.

Attacking the previous UPA government in India, Vaishnaw said, “Finance secretaries were recruited through lateral entry and the principle of reservation was not taken into account.”

“Dr Manmohan Singh ji, Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia and before that Dr Vijay Kelkar ji also became Finance Secretaries only through lateral entry. Did the Congress take up the Reservation Principle at that time?” Vaishnav asked.

A controversy erupted on Saturday after The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced a recruitment drive for 45 Joint Secretariesdirectors and undersecretaries through lateral entry, seeking specialists, including those from the private sector, for government roles.

The decision triggered a backlash from opposition parties, who argued that it jeopardised the reservation rights of marginalised communities. In response, the Centre directed the UPSC to withdraw the advertisement to ensure that marginalised communities were given adequate representation in government services.

How politicians reacted:

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to X (formerly Twitter) to say, “We will protect the Constitution and reservation system at all costs. We will foil conspiracies like BJP’s ‘lateral entry’ at any cost.”

“I repeat: by going beyond the 50% reservation limit, we will ensure social justice on the basis of caste counting,” he added.

Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) party chief Prakash Ambedkar criticised the BJP for its earlier arbitrary actions during its previous majority rule at the centre. He pointed out that the party had no option but to cancel the recent lateral entry recruitment after facing challenges.

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to social justice. He acknowledged that lateral entry schemes began during the Congress era, but stressed that the PM consistently supports reservations for marginalised communities.
