Ramdev attacks allopathy: Yoga guru Ramdev has revived his criticism of allopathic medicine, claiming that “millions of people in India have perished due to the use of allopathic medicine.”
Addressing a press conference at Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar, Ramdev stressed the need for medical autonomy and reiterated his commitment to a “swadeshi revolution” aimed at achieving economic, social and medical freedom in India.
Ramdev accused foreign pharmaceutical companies of fostering dependence on synthetic drugs, which he called “toxic”. He said the widespread use of these “poisonous” medicines led to the deaths of millions of people every year. “The dream of medical freedom remains unfulfilled as millions of people continue to suffer and die from allopathic drugs,” he said. He drew a parallel between the historical suffering during British rule and the current health crisis blamed on synthetic drugs.
The yoga guru highlighted Patanjali’s mission to promote indigenous and natural healthcare practices, and advocated for a shift towards social enterprises that address social and environmental challenges. He has a history of attacking allopathic medicine, which has led to legal disputes, including a lawsuit by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and an FIR related to his past comments.
In July, the Delhi High Court ordered Ramdev and his associate, Acharya Balkrishna, to retract statements in which they claimed that allopathy was responsible for numerous deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. The court also ordered them to clarify that Patanjali’s Coronil is not a cure for COVID-19 as it is only approved as an “immune booster.”
The Indian Medical Association has accused Ramdev of making “baseless claims” about Coronil and has filed cases against him for spreading misinformation. While Ramdev continues to champion social enterprises and indigenous healthcare, his comments have sparked significant debate and concern among medical professionals and the general public.
