Madrid started the season with a 1-1 draw away to Mallorca, followed by a 3-0 win against Real Valladolid. However, Los Blancos were unable to maintain their winning streak, as they were held to a draw against Las Palmas.
Two draws and one win from the opening three games of the La Liga season have left the defending champions in fifth place, while arch-rivals Barcelona are flying with three wins from three games and sit top of the La Liga points table.
Madrid striker Vinicius Jr. converted a second-half penalty to cancel out Alberto Moleiro’s early goal and save the Spaniards from a tense 1-1 draw.
France captain Kylian Mbappe failed to live up to expectations once again as he went scoreless for a third consecutive game. Mbappe had joined Madrid in the summer from Paris St Germain as a free agent.
Although coach Carlo Ancelotti made four changes to the side that struggled to beat lowly Valladolid on Sunday, Real Madrid again started the game slowly and unfocused, allowing Las Palmas’ Moleiro to score a precise finish after a quick counterattack in the fifth minute.
The hosts wasted several chances to extend their lead against a chaotic and disorganised Real defence, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois making three incredible saves.
After the break, Rodrygo came off the bench to give the visitors the pace and creativity they had been lacking in the first half.
Las Palmas goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen made fine saves from Antonio Ruediger, Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni and Vinicius Jr, but it was striker Sandro who squandered a clear chance to extend the home side’s lead in the 54th minute, firing the ball just over the bar.
However, the LaLiga champions managed to salvage a point thanks to Vinicius’ penalty after a handball by defender Alex Suarez.
Real Madrid host Betis on Sunday, while 16th-placed Las Palmas travel to the Basque Country to face Alavés.
