Regional parties took the floor in Haryana, crisis of survival, do you know why this happened?

Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: The growing popularity and influence of national parties in Haryana is weakening the influence of regional parties. This is clearly evident from the recent election results. The 2019 Haryana Assembly elections saw a direct contest between the Congress and the BJP, with the Congress winning 36.49% of the votes and the BJP 28.08% of the votes. The Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) emerged as the third largest party by winning 10 seats and 14.80% of the votes.

In the 2014 assembly elections, the BJP won as the single largest party by securing 33.5% of the votes, while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) came second with 24.11% of the votes and the Congress came third with 20.58% of the votes. Until 2018, INLD was the leading regional party in Haryana but was affected by the split in the Chautala family. Dushyant Chautala, along with his father Ajay Singh Chautala, broke away from the INLD and founded the Jannayak Janata Party.

In the 2019 assembly elections, INLD’s vote share fell to 2.44% and it could win only one seat, while the JJP joined the coalition government with the BJP by winning 10 seats with 14.80% of the votes. However, within five years, the JJP also started disintegrating. Four JJP MLAs joined the BJP and three joined the Congress. Now JJP has only three MLAs left, including Dushyant Chautala and his mother Naina Chautala. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the JJP’s vote share stood at just 0.87%, while the INLD got just 1.74% of the votes. The Jat community, which was earlier the vote bank of both parties, has now moved closer to the Congress.

INLD and JJP have formed an alliance to save their existence. INLD has formed an alliance with BSP and JJP has formed an alliance with Chandrashekhar Azad’s Azad Samaj Party. However, the BSP’s base has also weakened in Haryana and the JJP has ceded 20 seats to the ASP. According to political analysts, the vote bank of the JJP and INLD is falling fast and they are just trying to show their presence in the elections.

Both parties are presenting themselves as kingmakers, but experts believe that the main contest in the Haryana Assembly elections will be between the Congress and the BJP. A triangular contest can be seen in some areas, but the influence of regional parties has been rapidly declining. The INLD used to offer tough competition to the national parties, but after the party split, its strength has weakened.

The history of regional party rule in Haryana has also been weak. In 1967, Rao Virendra Singh took over as Chief Minister of the Vishal Party of Haryana, but his rule lasted only 241 days. In 1999, Bansilal formed the Haryana Vikas Party government, but his tenure also lasted three years and 74 days. The INLD formed the government twice, but Omprakash Chautala’s term was completed only between 2000 and 2005. In the 2024 elections in Haryana, the existence of regional parties is now seriously questioned and they have been marginalised.
