Calcutta: The Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal took a major step on Wednesday. The government sacked Dr Suhrita Paul from the post of director of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Besides, the superintendent of the hospital and the head of the chest department were also sacked. The incident occurred when students marched towards the health department headquarters against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old post-graduate doctor in the hospital.Why was action taken?
In fact, the protesting doctors raised their demands in a meeting with officials of the health department. They also demanded that all persons holding administrative positions like the Medical Superintendent and Deputy Director (MSVP) and the Director, who were present at the hospital on the night of the vandalism, be sacked. According to sources, the Health Department has not officially said anything to the protesting doctors. The doctors are awaiting arguments from the CBI in the case before the Supreme Court tomorrow.

When did Dr. Suhrita Paul take office?
Dr Suhrita Paul was appointed as the director of RG Kar Hospital after the former director Dr Sandeep Ghosh resigned following the uproar over the gruesome rape and murder case. However, Ghosh was soon appointed as the director of the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), sparking off another controversy.

What’s the problem?In fact, on the morning of August 9, a 31-year-old female post-graduate doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Hospital. The incident created a huge stir among the medical community and women across the country. A few days after the rape and murder incident, a mob vandalised the hospital, leaving several people injured and the police fired tear gas to disperse the mob. The footage showed the mob vandalising the hospital’s emergency ward and some police vehicles parked outside.
