FORDA announces nationwide protests as doctors suspend elective services over incident at RG Kar Medical College
He Federation of Resident Physicians Associations (FORD) has announced a nationwide suspension of elective services in hospitals on August 12. strike supports residents of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata following the tragic rape and murder of a female postgraduate medical trainee at the college on 9 August.
In solidarity with the National strikeDeen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College and its affiliated hospitals will also suspend elective services. Maulana Azad Medical College and its associated facilities will commence an indefinite suspension of elective services, including outpatient departments (OPDs), wards and elective operations, from August 12.
According to ANI, the tragic incident has sparked a political controversy in West Bengal. On August 10, Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee suggested bringing an ordinance or bill to ensure that rape trials are completed within seven days. He condemned the politicisation of the issue and stressed the urgency of speedy justice.
“This issue should not be politicised. I have seen many political parties coming out on the streets. Instead, we should bring an ordinance or a bill to provide speedy justice within seven days. The protesting BJP leaders should bring a bill to punish rapists within seven days and as the opposition, the job of the TMC and Congress is to support the bill. Why will the trial take five or six years? A mother and father have lost their daughter,” he said.
On Saturday evening, August 10, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, organized a candlelight march to protest the death of a postgraduate student at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal.
Doctors from Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital joined the protest and demanded a CBI probe into the incident. The protesters carried placards and chanted slogans demanding, “We want a CBI probe.”
In Kolkata, Congress workers also staged a protest rally on Saturday, demanding justice for the recent tragic incident.
Earlier, BJP lawmaker Agnimitra Paul and Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, had demanded a CBI probe into the incident at RG Kar Medical College.
