Directed by Shuchi Talati, the coming-of-age film has received praise at several international festivals, including Cannes, where it screened as part of Cannes Écrans Juniors, as well as its award-winning entry at the Sundance Film Festival, where it had its world premiere.

According to the makers, “Girls Will Be Girls” is set in a boarding school in a small Himalayan village in northern India. It follows the journey of Mira, a 16-year-old girl whose rebellious awakening intertwines with her mother’s unfulfilled experiences in her transition to adulthood. The film stars Preeti Panagrahi and Kani Kusruti.

Fazal and Chadha, who backed the film through Pushing Button Studios, said they are looking forward to the Australian premiere of “Girls Will Be Girls” at IFFM.

“We are incredibly honoured that ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ has been chosen to close such a prestigious film festival. The journey of this film has been extraordinary and we are delighted to share it with Australian audiences. We are confident that the film will find much love, as it has done so far internationally,” said Fazal.

“We are beyond excited to have ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ close out the 2024 Melbourne Indian Film Festival. This film has been a labour of love and it is incredibly gratifying to see it resonate with audiences around the world. Thank you for the immense support and we are grateful to IFFM for choosing our film to close out their 15th edition of the festival,” Chadha added.

IFFM Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM said they are honoured to have Girls Will Be Girls as the closing film for this year’s gala.

“This section was created specifically because the film truly speaks to current times and is absolutely true to the coming-of-age genre. The film has come an incredible way internationally and we are proud to be introducing it to Australia with its official Australian premiere at IFFM,” he said.

Girls Will Be Girls is an Indo-French co-production, a collaboration of Pushing Buttons Studios, Blink Digital, Crawling Angel Films and Dolce Vita Films. It also stars Jitin Gulati and Kesav Binoy Kiron.

The IFFM opened on August 15.
