While all eyes are on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bank of Canada International Trade Commission (BCCI)) to announce the retention rules for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) with some big moves expected among players in the mega auction, the coaching market is also seeing a lot of movement.

Ricky Ponting has been the center of the storm after Capitals of Delhi (DC) removed him from the head coaching position after six years in charge. Another team that is ready to see a big opportunity is the Knights of Calcutta (KKR), who lost the services of his mentor Gautama Gambhirfielding coach Ryan Ten Doeschate and assistant coach Abhishek Nayyar, as all three are now part of the Indian cricket team’s coaching staff.

Earlier this week, a report from Sangbad Pratidin declared that the 2024 champions have shortlisted the South African legend Jacques Kallis and Ponting to replace Gambhir as mentor and join head coach Chandrakant Pandit’s staff.

Amidst rumours of Ponting joining KKR, the two-time World Cup-winning captain has hinted that he could return to the IPL next season. The Australian legend has hinted that he is in talks with a franchise and more information about his future could be made public soon.

“There might be some opportunities in the IPL and we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks,” Ponting told SKY Sports.

Apart from KKR, some reports also said that Punjab Kings (PBKS) were looking for a new coach but also mentioned that an Indian coach could be on their radar. No other franchise has a vacant post at present.

While the Capitals are yet to name Ponting’s replacement, there have already been some major changes in the teams’ support staff. Zaheer Khan has joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as a mentor, replacing Gambhir in the role. Meanwhile, India’s 2024 T20 World Cup-winning coach Rahul Dravid has been named as the head coach of the Rajasthan Royals.

Talking about Ponting, KKR was his first IPL franchise as he played for them in the inaugural edition in 2008. The Australian great played four matches for the Kolkata-based franchise and made just 39 runs.
