Rift in Mahayuti? Sena minister ‘feels nauseous’ sitting with NCP MLAs, Ajit Pawar-led party says ‘better to quit…’

Cracks within the power Mahayuti Alliance in Maharashtra This week, Shiv Sena minister Tanaji Sawant revealed that he “felt like vomiting” after sitting with his fellow NCP lawmakers. The comment prompted a strong rebuttal from members of the party. The PNC insists that it is better to abandon the alliance than to hear such statements.

“I am a staunch supporter of Shiv Sainik who has never gotten along with the Congress or the NCP in his entire life. Even if we sit next to each other in the cabinet, I feel like vomiting after coming out,” Sawant said.

Rumors within the Mahayuti group have become increasingly stronger in recent months. Following its poor performance in the Lok Sabha electionsThe BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP alliance managed to win only 17 of the 48 seats in Maharashtra. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi party, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP) and Congress, fared better by winning 30 seats.

“My request to our party senior leaders would be that we should leave Mahayuti rather than listen to such statements. Either Tanaji Sawant should be sacked or we should leave the alliance,” NCP spokesperson Umesh Patil responded.

Party leader and MLC Amol Mitkari insisted that the NCP had remained silent “only to maintain the coalition dharma”. Members of rival party NCP (SP) also latched on to the remark and insisted that it was time for the BJP to expel the Ajit Pawar-led party from the Mahayuti.

“The time has come for the BJP to slowly but steadily oust Ajit Pawar from Mahayuti. All is not well and the cracks are growing wider by the day. It is time for Ajit Pawar to wake up and smell the coffee,” said NCP (SP) spokesperson Clyde Crasto.

The NCP founded by Sharad Pawar split in July 2023 when Ajit Pawar and MPs loyal to him broke away to join the Mahayuti. The Election Commission subsequently allotted the party name and symbol to the faction led by Ajit Pawar.
