Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not as Iron Man, but as Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom. The new role, revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2024’s Hall H event, has surprised and baffled Marvel fans ever since.

Many people wondered how the studio would address the fact that Tony Stark and Doctor Doom look the same. At first, fans thought that Doom could be a crazed Tony Stark from another universe. However, RDJ has now confirmed that he is not Tony Stark but Victor Von Doom.
Victor Von Doom: On Robert Downey Jr.’s role as Doctor Doom
For those who don’t know, Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., dies heroically in Avengers: Endgame while defending Earth-616 from Thanos. One of the events that fans have been most eagerly awaiting is his return to the role of Tony Stark.
However, he is returning as Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man. Now he is speaking out about his decision to play Victor Von Doom and clarifies that he is indeed playing the character, putting the Tony Stark variant theory to rest.
Comic Book Movie says Robert Downey Jr. talked about how the idea of him returning to play Doctor Doom in the MCU came about, how it was confirmed, and how it came to fruition. He recalls how his desire to help Bob Iger outside of the MCU and contribute to what was happening in the parks set the stage for everything else.
The actor then talked about sitting down with Kevin Feige to discuss why they wanted him back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how to make the hype worthwhile.
Robert Downey Jr. Talks About Playing Doctor Doom
Robert Downey Jr. commented on how they came up with the concept of Doctor Doom and what Victor Von Doom is like: “Then, over time, we both realized that he was something else that just belied any doubts that anyone might have about that guy: a very sophisticated creative thinker about how we can avoid backsliding, how we can avoid disappointing expectations, how we can continue to exceed expectations. And he mentioned Victor Von Doom. I looked this character up and I thought, ‘Wow. ‘ Later, Kevin said, ‘Let’s do Victor Von Doom right. Let’s do him right. ‘”
Robert Downey Jr. added: “So I said to Kevin, ‘Can I go talk to Bob Iger?’ He said, ‘About what?’ I said, ‘About everything. ‘ I had been to Bob’s house, and I don’t know how to describe that experience. I’ve had a lot of really cool experiences, but I went to Iger’s apartment, we sat down, and he said, ‘I like her. ‘ I said, ‘He likes her. ‘ He said, ‘Come to the Imagineering Campus. ‘ Feige and I went to the Imagineering Campus and you want to talk about two guys who are not easily impressed, let alone at the same time… I can’t say too much, but what’s happening there right now is beyond my expectations of what was possible.”

It’s obvious that the Avengers movie Avengers: Doomsday is named after Doctor Doom; however, how will he enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe and eventually become the big villain wreaking havoc on Doomsday?
According to recent rumors, he will be seen killing the entire Council of Kangs in the post-credits scene of Fantastic Four, effectively bidding farewell to Jonathan Majors’ antagonist and paving the way for Doom to become the next major antagonist.
