Will Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s muscle memory weaken after missing Duleep Trophy 2024? Sunil Gavaskar says this | Cricket News

Big names like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and more have been absent from the roster for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has no plans to play red-ball cricket at the moment and so he is out of the picture as other seniors are being given rest with the BCCI’s upcoming busy schedule in mind. However, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar does not agree with the rest being given to batsmen like Kohli and Rohit as he explained that batsmen start losing muscle memory when they do not practice regularly.

He understood the decision to rest Bumrah so that he could handle the workload as a bowler, but he is not in favour of giving rest to senior batsmen, even like Kohli or Rohit. The 75-year-old suggested that the duo should have participated in the Duleep Trophy as it would have provided them with valuable game practice. “The selectors have not picked captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the Duleep Trophy, so they are most likely to go into the Bangladesh Test series without much match practice,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-day.

“While it is understandable that someone like Jasprit Bumrah, with his delicate back, needs to be treated with care, the batsmen could have used some batting time in between. Once a player reaches 35 in any sport, regular competition will help him maintain the high standards he has set for himself. When there is a fairly long gap, muscle memory weakens a bit and getting back to the high standards of before is not easy,” he added. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had earlier explained that the board does not want to risk injury to some key players as India prepares for a 2-match series against Bangladesh, 3-match series against New Zealand and 5-match series against Australia.
