Rourkela News: Director-in-charge of Rourkela Steel Plant, Atanu Bhowmik told engineers on Engineers Day that you are producers, be progressive and build a better world. He said this while addressing the 57th Engineers Day function organised by the Rourkela Local Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) in collaboration with Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) at the Civic Centre on September 15. It is noteworthy that Engineers Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya, one of the finest engineers of India. Professor Pradeep Sarkar, Director-in-charge, NIT Rourkela and BR Palai, Director General-in-Chief (Iron), RSP were the chief guests of the programme while Dr Lalit Das, former Special Director General of Police, Odisha, was the Guest of Honour and keynote speaker. Also present on the occasion were President, Rourkela Local Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India), Santosh Kumar Polaki and Honorary Secretary, Dr. Ajit Behera. The theme of this year’s event was “Advancing Sustainability with Engineering Solutions that Adopt Latest AI-Driven Technologies.”

Underlines the importance of human intelligence in the use of AI

At the beginning of the programme, the photograph of Sir M Visvesvaraya was honoured with a floral offering. In his address, Shri Bhowmik spoke about the sustainability aspect of the steel industry and SAIL’s expansion plans. Giving the example of operating two blast furnaces instead of three at RSP without compromising on the production quantity, he underlined the importance of human intelligence, which is extremely essential for proper use of artificial intelligence. BR Palai in his address highlighted the rapid advancements in the field of engineering and the importance of keeping pace with it. On the occasion, Professor Pradeep Sarkar explained in detail how engineers have transformed the unimaginable into reality. He said that a few centuries ago even the richest kings and queens did not think of going to the other corner of the world, whereas today even a common person can avail these facilities. In his interesting presentation replete with mythological stories and anecdotes, Dr Lalit Das explained how without proper control, artificial intelligence can become Bhasmasur.

Speakers of technical presentations were honored

On this occasion, PK Mehrotra, former President, Institution of Engineers (India), Rourkela Local Centre and former General Manager (RSP), along with former Secretary, IEI, Rourkela Local Centre, Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering, NIT, Rourkela, were present. Suresh Prasad Singh was honoured by Atanu Bhowmik. During the programme, technical paper presenters and coordinators of all India seminars were also honoured. At the outset, Mr. Polaki welcomed the event. A presentation on the life and contributions of Sir M Visvesvaraya was made. The Engineers Day oath was taken by those present. Dr. Ajit Behera expressed his vote of thanks. Dr. Rachna Sherawat of NIT Rourkela conducted the programme.
