Rourkela News: SAIL’s Plate Mill, Rourkela Steel Plant’s Dynamic Quality Circle Group has eliminated delays through an innovative project called Elimination of Delays due to Failure of Groove Roll Gearbox Bridge. This has increased production, throughput and productivity. The plate mill relies on 12 grooved rolls to send the slabs to the mill, out of which there are eight rolls including one idle roll on the input side and four rolls on the output side. These groover rolls are driven by three gearboxes. The Dynamic Quality Circle group observed that the groover roll gearbox 2 located near the work roll of the mill was prone to damage to both the input and output gears, leading to delays taking 10-12 hours to restore the gearbox to its operational condition. In the investigation, the dynamic QC group included Deputy Director (Facilitator), SK Swain, MOMT (Group Leader), JC Bisoi, OCT (Deputy Leader), K Barik, OCT, RP Hembrom, Operator, SK Behera ACT, S Sahu. ACT Anand Ekka found that the outer sides of both pools within the gearbox were attached to the walls, but the inner sides lacked vertical support. To resolve this, the team cut two plates, each 20mm thick, to fit into the gaps between the bridges, then fabricated and welded these plates vertically to the underside of the bridges and the gearbox, creating two separate bridges effectively transformed into a single, strong structure. This modification ensured that any uneven loading from the mill was evenly distributed between the bridges, avoiding stress points that previously caused joint cracks. As a result of this innovative initiative, delays caused by bridge failures have been completely eliminated.
20 members of the self-help group received training in mushroom cultivation
Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) CSR conducted training on mushroom cultivation at the Institute of Periwinkle Development (IPD) on 3rd and 4th September. General Manager (HR) GR Dash presented certificates to the trainees at the final session. The training programme was attended by 20 members of self-help groups from Birkera and Degaghat villages of Lathikata block. The trainees were given theoretical and practical information on mushroom cultivation. After the training, each trainee was given a bag containing a self-made mushroom cultivation kit and a bottle of mushroom seeds to cultivate at their respective places and inspire others to do the same. RSE Master Trainers T Bhengra and B Ekka along with trained mushroom cultivation instructor Kamla Toppo from Suman Self Help Group of Dalposh village conducted the training session. General Manager (CSR) Munmun Mitra provided information about the scheme and objective of the programme. B Ekka conducted the programme. CSR Manager Richa Suddhiram coordinated the program with the CSR team.
