Russia and Ukraine release 230 POWs after UAE’s seventh mediation effort

Russia and Ukraine each exchanged 115 prisoners on Saturday after negotiations brokered by the United Arab Emirates, an Emirati official said, the first such prisoner swap since Ukraine launched its offensive inside Russia this month.

The Emirati official spoke on condition of anonymity because the details were not yet public.

In a message posted on the social network X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the United Arab Emirates: “Today another 115 of our defenders have returned home. These are soldiers of the National Guard, the Armed Forces, the Navy and the State Border Guard Service.”

It would be the seventh such exchange the UAE has mediated since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Reuters reported. Abu Dhabi, a close security partner of the United States, has maintained warm relations with Moscow throughout the war, frustrating some Western officials. It has also strengthened ties with kyiv.

UAE officials say their ability to speak with a range of international actors means they can effectively mediate between parties and promote cooperation and security.
