Sara Ali Khan’s inherited lehenga, made from vintage brocade saris, is reminiscent of Priyanka Chopra’s revamped Banarasi gown

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Mumbai are an experience in themselves and understandably, you need to go all out sartorially when visiting Bappa. Sara Ali Khan has excelled in this regard. She recently arrived at Ambani’s Ganapati Puja, decked out in a riot of colours. What looked like a maximalist and extravagant display of luxury festive wear, actually turned out to be a meticulously crafted ode to vintage textiles and craftsmanship.

Mayyur Girotra’s Heirloom lehenga, designed by Sara, was not a random burst of inspiration. It represents the end result of years of conscious crafting. How, you ask? The multi-coloured panels that add festive cheer to every twist of the lehenga, have actually been woven from a set of vintage brocade saris, 50-60 years old, collected by the designer over the years – truly a far-reaching endeavour.

While we all support sartorial innovation, the traditional route is timeless and this one-of-a-kind lehenga is an example of the same.

By the way, this legacy lehenga can’t help but take you on a little trip back in time, back to the NMACC weekend of 2023. Priyanka Chopra Jonas was back in town and made it known. She showed up to the star-studded evening dressed in a custom Amit Aggarwal. The designer crafted a bold, colorful couture gown from a 60-year-old vintage Banarasi brocade saree made with silver threads and gold plating on khadi silk. The vision was brought to life in Varanasi over a period of 6 months. The holographic bustier that the reimagined saree was paired with served as a link between the traditional past and the ever-changing present.

By the way, both Sara and Priyanka were styled by Ami Patel. Stylist to the stars, Ami’s eye for innovation and respect for tradition is certainly worth a mention.

“Every Banarasi saree has a story,” and Kriti Sanon’s look for day two of the NMACC gala ended with a gown and cape, courtesy of designer Monisha Jaising. The beautiful thing about creativity is that while two inspirations can often end up treading dangerously similar territories, how either takes shape is entirely up to the creator. So while Kriti’s reworked Banarasi brocade couture gown was quite similar to PC’s colorful template, the cut and end result were largely different. Kriti’s couture gown, the centerpiece of Monisha’s Banaras Tales series, featured a cutout bodice, hip-high slit, and off-the-shoulder cape. The high bubble braid and smoky eyes screamed Lara Croft (desi).

The NMACC also witnessed a subtle yet impactful fashion moment, led by everyone’s favourite actress Shraddha Kapoor. The actress was the muse of Manish Malhotra, who reworked a lush red Paithani saree to merge it with fashion seamlessly. Styled by Namrata Deepak, Shraddha’s ensemble included a one-shoulder, sweetheart-neckline jumpsuit. The Paithani took centre stage along her bust, crossing over to fall into a dramatic floral-lined train.

Which of these reinvented saree silhouettes is your favorite?
