After a nervous start, Pakistan managed to post a respectable score at the end of the rain-soaked opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. Saim Ayub (56) and Saud Shakeel He scored a fighting half-century to guide the hosts to 158-4 at stumps on Day 1 after Bangladesh asked him to bat first.
Pakistan vice-captain Saud Shakeel (57 not out off 92) and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan (24 off 31) were unbeaten at the crease when play ended on Day 1. Only 41 overs were bowled on the first day of the first Test in Rawalpindi as the match started with a delay due to the wet outfield pitch.
The hosts, who batted first, had a tough time coping with Bangladesh’s pace attack as Abdullah Shafique (2), along with captain Shan Masood (6) and Babar Azam (0) were dismissed in the first 10 overs. After losing three wickets cheaply, Saim Ayub and Saud joined forces to bail Pakistan out of trouble.
It was Hasan Mahmud who gave Bangladesh the much-needed breakthrough by removing the dangerous Ayub in the 32nd over. Ayub attempted an expansive drive against Mahmud but he slipped the ball to Mehidy Hasan Miraz at the slip cordon. Thereafter, Saud and Rizwan took Pakistan to a respectable position at the end of the day.

During his crucial knock on Wednesday, Saud Shakeel completed 1000 runs in Test cricket. He equalled Saeed Ahmed’s record and became the fastest Pakistani to reach 1000 Test runs, achieving the feat in just 20 innings.
It is noteworthy that Ahmed achieved this milestone in 1959, during the Karachi Test match against Australia.
After Saud and Saeed, Sadiq Mohammad is on the list, who scored 1000 Test runs for Pakistan in 22 innings, while Javed Miandad did so in 23. Taufeeq Omar, Abdullah Shafique and Abid Ali came in 24 innings.
After scoring his seventh fifty in a Test, Saud will look to score big on Day 2 and help Pakistan post a big total in the first innings of the first Test against Bangladesh.
