SC refuses to continue Grade I post exam in Telangana

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the ongoing examination conducted by the Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC) to fill up 563 Grade I posts in various government departments, saying such an order would lead to “chaos”.

“The exam will start at 2 pm… There will be chaos if we suspend the exam at this stage,” a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said, when senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing on behalf of a petitioner, pressed for an interim stay.

“The exam will be held today. The students have already entered the examination centres,” the court noted.

Sibal claimed that the aspirants would lose the opportunity to appear for the exam which is being held for the first time in the state.

The Group I main exam conducted by the TGPSC began on Monday and will continue till October 27 for all 563 vacancies.

A total of 31,383 candidates have qualified for the main exam. These exams were held for the first time since the formation of Telangana and in 2011 when they were last conducted.

The quota policy, which is being followed by the TGPSC under a government order (GO), has been challenged in the high court by one Pogula Rambabu.

The high court noted that the Telangana High Court had taken up the matter and asked it to decide the matter before declaration of results.

Candidates have been protesting against the GO seeking to reschedule the exams on the grounds that SCs (scheduled castes), STs (scheduled tribes) and backward classes suffer under its reservation provisions.
