This was officially announced through a government statement on October 19, 2024. The statement reads: “The government has declared November 9 as a working day to make up for the holiday.”

It comes after the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Government Teachers’ Organizations and Employees’ Organizations (JACTTO-GEO) requested the Chief Minister to declare November 1 as a holiday. The association noted that many people often travel to their native places to celebrate Diwali. He highlighted that they may face difficulties in returning to work the day after Diwali. Tamil Nadu SchoolsUniversities will also be closed on October 31, 2024 for Diwali celebrations.

Several southern states are witnessing incessant rains. Due to the same, the state government directed the respective district officials to announce school holidays on October 16. Due to heavy rains, schools were closed for a few days in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. A yellow alert was issued in several parts of the state for Friday, October 18. According to the IMD update, isolated heavy rain is likely to occur in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal until October 21.
