The scheme, which will benefit around 4.5 crore families, will provide Rs 5 lakh free health insurance per family per year.
With this new provision, all citizens over 70 years of age will be entitled to this health care coverage, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
Those already covered under the scheme will get an additional Rs 5 lakh per year for themselves, while those from families who were not eligible earlier will now get the same coverage at the family level.
Senior citizens already availing of other public health insurance schemes such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) or the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) can either retain their existing coverage or opt for AB PM-JAY. Individuals having private health insurance plans will also be eligible to receive benefits under this new policy.
The expansion of AB PM-JAY, the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance programme, was initially announced by Prime Minister Modi in April 2024.
The scheme currently provides healthcare coverage to 55 million people, and 7.37 million hospital admissions have been recorded to date.
