Sensex and Nifty: After initial rise in domestic markets, fall, Sensex at many points

Sensex and ingenious: Major stock indices Sensex and Nifty rose in early trade on Thursday, but soon, due to continued withdrawal of foreign capital, they lost their initial gains and started trading lower.

BSE Sensex rose 280.04 points to 81,781.40 in early trade and NSE Nifty rose 58.2 points to 25,029.50. However, later both indices started trading at a loss.

Sensex fell 210.87 points to 81,265.97 and Nifty fell 116.15 points to 24,848.25.

Among the 30 companies listed on Sensex, shares of Infosys, State Bank of India, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Industries, Sun Pharma and Tata Consultancy Services gained the most. Shares of Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti, Axis Bank and HDFC Bank were among the losers.

In Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi and Japan’s Nikkei 225 posted losses, while China’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng posted gains.

US markets closed on a positive note on Wednesday.

International standard Brent crude oil settled at $74.43 per barrel with a gain of 0.28 percent.

According to stock market data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were sellers on Wednesday and sold shares worth a net Rs 3,435.94 crore.
