- Mexican Independence Day: Mexico declared its independence from Spain in 1810.
- September 16, 1932: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, went on a hunger strike to protest against the British government’s decision to separate India’s electoral system on the basis of caste. A series of civil disobedience movements he launched forced the British to accept his terms.
- 16 September 1963: The Federation of Malaysia was formed, consisting of Malaysia, Singapore, British North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak.
- The United States Congress granted a national charter to the American Legion, an organization of American war veterans.
- World Ozone Day: The Montreal Protocol was signed on 16 September 1987. The world has been celebrating Ozone Day since 1994. The aim of this day is to remind people of the depletion of the ozone layer and to find solutions to preserve it.
