Malayalam film director M. Mohan passed away at a private hospital here on Tuesday.
Known for his films from the 1980s, which are still talked about today, the 76-year-old filmmaker had been ill for some time. The highlight of all his films was that he relied on ordinary actors and their acting talent to bring the films to the hearts of family audiences.
In a career as a director that began in 1978 and ended in 1999, he had made around 25 Malayalam movies, Most of which were well received at the box office.
Her notable films include Pakshe, Isabella, Oru Katha Oru Nunnakkatha, Idavela, Vida Parayum Munpe, Randu Penkuttikal and Shalini Ente Koottukari.
He also had a talent for scriptwriting and began his career under the direction of legends like Krishnan Nair and Padmarajan, and was instrumental in converting his neighbour Innocent from a producer to an actor.
Later, Innocent became the most popular comedian and character artiste and this star status enabled him to win as a CPI-M candidate from the Chalakudy Lok Sabha seat in 2014, when he defeated Congress veteran PC Chacko, but lost to Benny Behanan in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Innocent passed away last year after fighting cancer.
Yesteryear actress Jalaja, who acted in several of Mohan’s films, said, “He shined a lot when there were no superstars in the industry and he gave a lot of importance to the finer aspects of filmmaking, especially the story. The songs from his films still resonate very closely with many people and even now people ask me about it.”
When Mohan joined forces with acclaimed screenwriter John Paul, the end result was a box office hit.
Another aspect of his films was that they were a mix of the artistic and the commercial, carefully and tactfully woven into the script.
His last rites will be performed on Wednesday in his home district Ernakulam after the arrival of his son.
