When is Sharadiya Navratri 2024?
According to the Panchang (Hindu calendar), the nine-day festival of Navratri begins on the Pratipada of Ashwin Shukla Paksha and lasts till Navami. This year, Sharadiya Navratri will begin on Thursday, October 3, 2024, and will conclude on October 12, 2024. During these nine days, devotees worship Goddess Durga in her nine different forms.

This year, Sharadiya Navratri begins on a Thursday and the goddess is said to arrive in a palanquin. It is believed that when Navratri begins on a Thursday, Goddess Durga’s vehicle is a palanquin or ‘doli’.

According to astrologers, the arrival of Goddess Durga on a palanquin is not considered a wholly positive sign. It can signify possible concerns such as economic decline, slowdown in trade, increased violence or pandemics and the onset of natural disasters.

Although Goddess Durga’s primary vehicle is a lion, giving her the name Sherawali, her mode of transport changes during Navratri depending on the day of the week.

- If Navratri begins on a Monday or Sunday, Goddess Durga arrives on an elephant.
- If it starts on a Saturday or Tuesday, arrive on horseback.
- If you start on a Thursday or Friday, your vehicle is a palanquin.
- If it starts on a Wednesday, arrive by boat.
Importance of different vehicles:
- Palanquin: It is not considered auspicious.
- Horse: It is not considered auspicious.
- Elephant: Very auspicious.
- Boat: Very auspicious.
