Shashi Tharoor: “Symbols of India’s friendship with Bangladesh are being attacked” | India News

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said it is a challenge for people in India to remain indifferent when every symbol of friendship between the two countries is under attack.

Highlighting the unrest in Bangladesh, Tharoor said it is tragic to witness what was once celebrated as a democratic revolution turning into anarchy and violence targeting minorities and the Hindu minority.

He further added that India should support the people of Bangladesh.

“It is extremely tragic that what was hailed as a democratic and popular revolution has degenerated into anarchy and violence targeting minorities and the Hindu minority… We in India must stand with the people of Bangladesh. But we find it difficult to remain indifferent when every symbol of India’s friendship with Bangladesh is attacked,” Tharoor was quoted as saying by ANI.

Tharoor exaggerated the way several institutions were vandalised during the ongoing violence, making it a “very negative” signal to the people of India.

“The statue of Pakistani forces surrendering to Indian soldiers has been vandalised. The Indian Cultural Centre has been destroyed and several institutions have been vandalised, including the ISKCON temple. All these things send very negative signals to the people of India. It is also not in Bangladesh’s interest to give such an impression,” he said.
