Sheetal Devi falls short of world record in archery at Paris Paralympics, but secures second position in qualifying round

Despite missing the world record by just one point, Indian armless archer Sheetal Devi made history on August 29 and secured second position in the women’s compound qualifying round at the iconic Les Invaldis Arena during Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Sheetal scored a personal best of 703 points. At 17, she is the youngest Indian athlete to compete at the Paralympics.

Sheetal was involved in a tense competition with Turkish player Oznur Cure Girdi, but she showed her best form. Her opponent Girdi scored 704.

According to details, the current world record for open compound Paralympic archer was 698, set by Great Britain’s Phoebe Paterson Pine in July in Oxfordshire. Previously, Great Britain’s Paralympic archer Jessica Stretton had set the old Paralympic record of 694 at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Now, on August 30, Sheetal will face the winner of the round of 32 between Mariana Zuniga of Chile and Choi Na Mi of Korea. Both had finished 15th and 18th in the qualification round. It may be recalled that Zuniga won a silver in the women’s individual open compound at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Sheetal’s achievements:

She is the only one International champion in para-archery No upper limits. In 2023, she qualified for her first Paralympic Games in Paris and won a silver medal at the 2024 World Para Archery Championships in the Czech Republic.

Besides, Sheetal won a silver medal at the Khelo India NTPC National Ranking Archery Meet in 2024. She also won a gold medal in the women’s compound team event at the Czech Para Archery Qualification Series.
