India’s star archer Sheetal Devi made headlines with an impressive performance on the first day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Thursday, August 29. Sheetal kicked off her campaign by scoring 703 points in the qualification round of the women’s individual compound event and fell just one point short of the world record.
Sheetal, 17, the only hands-free competitor at the 17th Summer Paralympic Games, stunned the crowd with her personal best. She dominated the top spot until the final round and finished second behind Turkey’s Cure Girdi Oznur, who set a world record by scoring 704 points.

Sheetal will next face Malaysia’s Nur Jannaton Abdul Jalil in the round of 32 on Friday. Nur Jannaton Abdul Jalil finished 24th in the qualifying round with a total score of 646 points and twenty tens.
Meanwhile, India failed to open its medal account on the first day of the sporting events at the Paris 2024 Games. Jyoti Gaderiya became the first Para-Indian cyclist to compete at the Summer Paralympics but failed to secure final qualification after finishing last in the women’s C1-3000m individual pursuit classification.
In another potential medal match, India’s top Para Taekwondo athlete Aruna Tanwar suffered a defeat to Turkey’s Nurcihan Ekinci in the round of 16 clash of the women’s K44-47 kg category on Thursday. Tanwar was one of the leading Indian medal contenders in Paris but suffered an injury during her match against Ekinci, which cost her an early exit.
