Southgate is keeping his options open but is in no rush to accept a new coaching job

Former England manager Gareth Southgate said he was in no rush to find a new role but would keep an open mind as he assesses opportunities in the dugout or beyond.

The 54-year-old resigned in July after England’s second successive defeat in the European Championship final, ending an eight-year spell with the Three Lions.

England are still searching for a replacement for Southgate, although caretaker manager Lee Carsley has impressed with 2-0 wins in their first two games against Ireland and Finland.

Southgate has been linked with a possible move to Old Trafford as a possible successor to Manchester United’s embattled manager Erik ten Hag, as well as a technical observer role with UEFA, European football’s governing body.Read also: The 2024-25 Indian Super League will see 6 former title-winning coaches at the helm of their clubs

“I’ve got plenty of opportunities, I’m very open-minded to what can happen in the future, both in football and outside of football,” Southgate told Sky News on Wednesday.

“I’m just going to take some time, cool off, recharge and go from there. I think people know right now that I need to get my energy back. I’m not going to rush into anything, I want to make sure I make good decisions.”

Southgate said he helped re-establish England on the international stage during his tenure, which saw the team reach the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the quarter-finals in 2022, and the finals of the last two European Championships.

“I don’t think we have any regrets. We made decisions with the information we had at the time to try and put together a winning team,” Southgate added.

“I gave my all at work. We created expectations and that was important. We needed to put English football back on the map.”
