Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal withdraws from the Laver Cup in Berlin

Rafael Nadal withdrew from next week’s Laver Cup in Berlin on Thursday, leaving it unclear when the Spanish great will play again.

The Laver Cup, the tournament Roger Federer retired from in 2022 after teaming up with Nadal in doubles, would have been Nadal’s first event since Paris. Olympics and potentially one of his last.

“I am very disappointed to inform them that I will not be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” said Nadal, 38. “This is a team competition and to really support the European team, I need to do my best for them and at this moment there are other players who can help the team to victory.”

The 22-time Grand Slam champion did not comment on his current fitness following a series of injuries in recent years, nor on when he might be able to play again.

Nadal withdrew from the US Open last month, meaning he missed three of the four Grand Slam tournaments in 2024. He last played in the men’s doubles quarterfinals at the Olympics where he also lost in the second round of singles to Novak Djokovic.

The Laver Cup, which runs from Sept. 20-22, is a men’s indoor hard-court competition that pits Team Europe against Team World in a format reminiscent of golf’s Ryder Cup. It was not immediately announced who would replace Nadal.
