The grieving parents of the post-graduate doctor, who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, have raised serious concerns over the handling of her body, alleging that it was not in the same condition as it was initially found in the seminar room of the facility, hours after the incident.
Speaking to reporters, the parents criticised the West Bengal government for trying to stifle the spontaneous public protest despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s public protests against rape.
“We condemn any attempt to silence the voice of the people, to stop the movement for justice as there is no person involved in the incident. We hope that the CBI investigation will bring out the truth,” the father said from his residence in North 24 Parganas district on Saturday.
He further commented on the irony of the situation, saying, “While the state administration is muzzling spontaneous street protests against the heinous crime and demanding punishment for all those involved, the Chief Minister herself has come out on the streets to voice her protest against rape.”
When asked about the condition in which their daughter’s body was found, the parents shared disturbing details.
“We were told that our daughter’s body was not initially found in the same condition as it was later found in the seminary room. We cannot say much because we were not allowed to see the body first hand when we rushed to the hospital upon receiving the news,” the father explained.
The mother added, “Some people told us that there was no cloth on any part of the body.” However, the father interrupted her and said, “We cannot speak on the issue as we did not have access to the place where the body was kept. Please do not ask us such questions as the CBI investigation is ongoing.”
When asked if the woman used to record her daily experiences in a diary, the father confirmed.
Asked if three or four pages of the diary were missing, he said: “I cannot comment as the matter is pending. We will inform the CBI of what we have.”
He also said he had a picture of one of the torn-out pages, but declined to reveal its contents, saying it would be shared with investigators.
“Look, our daughter wanted to live happily, she had dreams in her eyes. We want severe punishment for those who crushed her dreams. We are grateful to the millions of people in the state and the country who are with us,” the father said, struggling to maintain his composure.
The mother said they received a call from the hospital at 10:53 p.m. on August 9. They arrived at the hospital at 12:30 a.m., but were not allowed to see their daughter’s body until 3 a.m. During that time, they had to wait in the respiratory medicine department for hours.
