Sunil Gavaskar backs Jay Shah as next ICC president, slams ‘eternal sifters’: ‘Players around the world will benefit’

Former Indian captain and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has backed Jay Shah to become the next ICC president. While Shah has not made any official announcement on whether he will contest the post of the next ICC president, reports suggest that the 35-year-old is all set to take up the prestigious post.

In a recent column for Sportstar, Gavaskar claimed that there were “old powers” at play when he claimed that Jay Shah was behind the current situation. CPI President Greg Barclay’s decision not to seek a third consecutive term.

By stating that Jay ShahBarclay’s rise will benefit both male and female players around the world, Gavaskar wrote: “In all likelihood, Jay Shah will be the next ICC president. Just as he has done for Indian cricket, both male and female players around the world will benefit. When Greg Barclay announced his decision not to stand for a third term, to which he was entitled, there were reports in the Old Powers media that Barclay’s decision had been forced upon him by Shah.”

“When Greg Barclay announced his decision not to stand for a third term, to which he was entitled, there were reports in the media of the former powers that Barclay’s decision had been forced upon him by the Shah. Only when the eternal plagiarists were asked what the representatives of their former powers were doing, it suddenly occurred to them that if indeed Barclay was forced not to stand for a third term, then what were his own representatives at the ICC doing at the meeting?” Gavaskar added.

Will Jay Shah be the next ICC president?

ICC President Greg Barclay confirmed last week that he will step down at the end of his third term on November 30. According to the details, the new ICC President will take office on December 1 and the deadline for nominations is August 27.

Since then, reports have suggested that Jay Shah could replace Barclay and become the youngest person to lead the company. CPIHe would also join Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar as Indians who have led the prestigious institution in the past.

Jay Shah is currently one of the most recognisable faces in cricket administration around the world and heads the ICC’s finance and commercial affairs sub-committee. He is said to have good relations with almost all of the 16 voting members and could command the support of as many as 15 of them.
