Celebrating a birthday in a unique and memorable way is every individual’s dream, and if it is celebrated in space, and not somewhere else other than the International Space Station (ISS) can only exist in a dream. Indian origin POT astronaut Sunita Williams celebrated her 59th birthday on Thursday (September 19, 2024) on the International Space Station (ISS). It was her second birthday on the ISS, after her first during her 2012 mission.
Unlike traditional festivities with cake and candles, Williams, who has been trapped in space since June 6, spent her birthday attending a conference with flight directors, discussing future mission objectives and scientific research on the orbiting laboratory.
Williams, currently part of Boeing’s crew flight test mission, has reportedly focused his efforts on maintaining the ISS’s life support systems.
Reports say that during the day, the man of Indian origin… astronautTogether with Don Pettit, he first replaced filters in the ISS’s waste and hygiene compartment, called the space toilet, then discussed mission objectives and future tasks with flight directors at NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston.
Indian fans celebrated the birthday of the Indian-origin astronaut. Indian music troupe Saregama organised a special birthday surprise with renowned singers like Sonu Nigam, Shaan and Neeti Mohan performing the classic birthday song “Bar Bar Din Ye Aaye”.
Taking to Instagram, Saregama shared, “Come on India, let’s sing #HappyBirthdaySunita along with India’s biggest icons and send our best wishes to astronaut Sunita Williams in space. Use #HappyBirthdaySunita to post your videos and tag @saregama_official.”
It is important to note that this is Williams’ third flight into space, after the first in 2006 and the second in 2012. According to NASA, “Sunita has spent a cumulative total of 322 days in space,” and is the second female astronaut with the largest number of spacewalks.
