‘Take the game to the next level’: Phil Salt reveals advice he received from Gautam Gambhir

England batsman Phil’s salt He said that if he followed some advice from his ex Knights of Calcutta mentor Gautama GambhirIt was all about playing a deep game. He was part of the Kolkata team that won the trophy during the 2024 Indian Premier League. Gambhir was the team mentor of the franchise at that time when Salt linked up with him in the Kolkata camp.

Reflecting on his time with Gambhir in the IPL, Salt felt that his competitiveness was a factor that helped him relate to him.

Gambhir, who had led Kolkata to two IPL titles during his playing days, returned to the franchise as a mentor before IPL 2024 and gave the team his Midas touch to help them win the title after a decade.

“There is nothing better than a brilliant experience like you get to go and win the IPL in the first place. I think GG (Gambhir) is not unknown to Indian cricket fans and cricket fans around the world. He is a player who, as you know, speaks for himself,” Salt said at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards ceremony.

“He’s a great competitor. I relate to him from that standpoint. He’s always looking for that 1% that will make the individual better and the team get to the finish line. So I loved working for him,” Salt added.

Recalling a conversation he had with Gambhir during a training session, Salt said he told the English batsman to take his innings deep and score runs, in the second half of the innings.

“I think the main advice I got from GG was to play hard, here in India. You know, from the moment I finished the first training session, he sat me down and said, ‘I know you’re going to score runs for us, but I want you to score most of your runs between the ten and twenty overs,'” he said at Eden Gardens,” Salt said.
