Tata Safari and Harrier SUVs bag Global NCAP Safest Pick award with highest safety scores in India

Homegrown carmaker Tata Motors on Wednesday bagged the Global NCAP Safer Choice Award for its sports utility vehicles (SUVs), the Safari and Harrier. When launched in 2023, the Safari and Harrier earned a five-star rating from Global NCAP for both adult and child occupant protection, achieving the highest scores in the #SaferCarsForIndia campaign.

David Ward, Chairman of the Towards Zero Foundation, said: “Tata Motors’ continued commitment to vehicle safety is very welcome and we are pleased to present the first of our new Safer Choice Awards for the Safari and Harrier.”

Launched by Global NCAP in 2014, the campaign aims to promote safer vehicles in India. Over the past decade, Global NCAP has completed over 60 safety assessments, contributing significantly to safety improvements in Indian cars. The award is valid for Safari and Harrier models produced on or after 18 August 2024.

To be eligible for the Safer Choice award, vehicles must meet specific safety criteria, including autonomous emergency braking (AEB), speed assist and blind spot detection (BSD) systems. Tata Motors subjected the Safari and Harrier to additional testing, with both models meeting the necessary performance and volume requirements.

According to Global NCAP, the Safer Choice Award, launched in 2018 and with updated protocols in August 2024, sets a high standard for automotive safety. To qualify, a vehicle must achieve a five-star rating for adult and child occupant protection, offer a speed assist system, AEB and BSD, and meet regulatory performance standards.

The SUVs come with safety features like 7 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), ISOFIX and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) including adaptive cruise control.
