This week’s tech launches: Barbie foldable phone, vivo T3 Pro 5G, and more

From Nokia parent company HMD unveiling the Barbie foldable phone to the realme 13 series and the vivo T3 Pro 5G, tech lovers were in for a treat in the last week of August 2024. Here, we take a look at the major developments in the tech sector this week:

HMD Barbie Flip Phone

Announced earlier this year at Mobile World Congress, HMD finally launched its Barbie foldable phone in collaboration with toymaker Mattel this week in select global markets. It features a 2.8-inch QVGA main display along with a 1.77-inch QQVGA cover screen, while the outer screen also functions as a mirror.

The device, which is powered by a Unisoc T107 SoC, supports 64MB of RAM and 128MB of internal storage, which can be externally expanded up to 32GB via a MicroSD card. It comes with the S30+ operating system with a Barbie-themed user interface.

The Barbie flip phone is priced at $129 in the US and will be available in the market from October 1. However, the company is reportedly yet to confirm whether the phone will be available in the Indian market.

realme 13 series

On Thursday, August 29, Realme unveiled its new realme 13 series, which includes the realme 13+ 5G and the realme 13 5G in the Indian market. The realme 13 5G smartphone comes with a 6.72-inch LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 580 nits.

Under the hood, it is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 5G chipset with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage, as well as having a 5,000mAh battery and 45W charger.

On the other hand, the realme 13+ 5G features a 6.67-inch AMOLED display that comes with a 120Hz refresh rate and 2,000 units of peak brightness. Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300E processor, it comes with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It also has a 50MP Sony Lyt 600 main camera as well as a 2MP monochrome sensor, in addition to the 16MP selfie camera.

Both smartphones are available for pre-bookings on Flipkart, realme, and offline stores.

realme Buds T01

Along with its 13 series, the Chinese smartphone vendor also introduced the realme Buds T01 in the Indian tech market. Featuring a 13mm driver, the realme Buds T01 offer up to 28 hours of total playback and come with an IPX4 rating for splashes and sweat.

Available in black and white colours, it can be purchased for ₹1,299.

vivo T3 Pro 5G

Chinese smartphone maker vivo on Tuesday unveiled its latest addition to its T3 series lineup: vivo T3 Pro 5G.

Powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor, it comes with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of expandable internal storage (RAM can be virtually expanded up to 16GB). The phone features a 6.76-inch 3D curved AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 4,500 nits.

For photography lovers, the smartphone features a dual camera setup, with a 50MP primary sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide lens with a 120-degree field of view. On the front, it has a 16MP selfie camera.

The vivo T3 Pro has a 5,500mAh battery and supports 80W fast charging. It runs on FunTouch OS 14, which is based on Android 14. The phone will support two years of Android software updates as well as three years of security patches. It will go on sale at noon on September 3 and will be available on Flipkart, vivo India e-store, and retail stores.

Jio Brain

At Reliance’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai on Thursday, August 29, Reliance Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani presented ‘Jio Brain’which is an AI services platform that offers a suite of AI tools to businesses. “To accelerate AI adoption, Jio is developing a suite of tools and platforms that span the entire AI lifecycle. We are calling it Jio Brain,” he said.

The 5G enterprise-grade integrated machine learning (ML) system offers “mobile-friendly long language models (LLMs)” as well as enterprise ML capabilities. It also helps businesses develop AI-based applications.
