The history of Sri Ranganayakaswamy temple

Located about 3 hours drive from Hyderabad, the Sri Ranganayakaswamy Temple was built during the 18th century AD and is a magnificent example of Vijayanagar architecture.

“According to legend, Krishnadevaraya, the ruler of Vijayanagar, came to Srirangam and was captivated by the Sri Ranganayakaswamy temple located there. He wished to build a Ranganayakaswamy temple in his kingdom. Later, Ranganayaka (Lord Vishnu) appeared in a dream and told the king that his idol was lying in the kingdom and that an eagle would guide him to that place. The next day, Krishnadevaraya followed the eagle and found the idol of the Lord between the Kothakota and Kanvayapally mountains. The king built the Sri Ranganayakaswamy temple near the Ratna Pushkarini lake. The temple is a classic example of Vijayanagar architecture. The temple was built by the Rajas of Wanaparthi Samsthanam on the embankment of the Ratna Pushpakarini lake,” states the Sri Ranganayakaswamy Temple website.

Today, it is one of the largest functioning Hindu temples in the world and is known to host over 300 weddings a year, mostly for villagers from nearby mandals.
