Pavel DurovCEO of TelegramTelegram was reportedly arrested at Le Bourget airport near Paris on Saturday as part of a preliminary investigation into Telegram’s moderation practices and its alleged failure to curb criminal activity on the platform. The arrest, reported by French media outlets BFM TV and TF1 and cited by Reuters, is part of a broader investigation accusing Telegram of failing to cooperate with police efforts to tackle illegal activities such as drug trafficking, child sexual abuse and fraud.

In response, Telegram issued a statement on its official news channel and on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Durov “has nothing to hide” and dismissing claims that the platform or its owner should be held responsible for the misuse of the app. Telegram emphasized its compliance with EU laws, including the Digital Services Act, and noted that its moderation practices align with industry standards and are continually improving.

Telegram, known for its strong stance on privacy and use of end-to-end encryption, has become one of the most popular social media platforms globally, particularly in Europe and Asia. The app allows for mass sharing of information across large groups, making it a powerful communication tool, but also raises concerns about its potential misuse for illegal activities.

The Paris prosecutor’s office is expected to release a statement on Monday, and Telegram has expressed hope for a quick resolution to the situation.
