Telegram CEO Pavel Durov recently made an announcement about the introduction of “new features” days after being released from prison in France.
Noting that 10 million paid subscribers are using Telegram Premium, Pavel Durov in a post on his official Telegram channel said: “Today, we are introducing new features and gradually removing some obsolete ones.”
French authorities have arrested the CEO of Telegram, accused of facilitating illicit content on the popular instant messaging platform. After his release, Pavel Durov blamed the sudden increase in the number of users of the messaging platform, which allowed criminals to engage in illegal activities. Denying allegations that the messaging app refused to cooperate with European authorities to limit illegal activities, saying the number of users grew to 950 million, which “caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform.”
This development follows the company’s decision to curb illicit activities and introduce “moderation”‘ on the messaging app. Pavel Durov’s recent post reads: “We removed the People Nearby feature, which was used by less than 0.1% of Telegram users but had problems with bots and scammers.”
Moderation efforts
He also mentioned that the messaging app will instead be introducing a “Businesses Nearby” feature, which will allow users to see legitimate and verified businesses. The post also says, “These businesses will be able to display product catalogs and accept payments seamlessly.”

He stressed that 99.999% of Telegram users are not involved in illegal activities, while only 0.001% of users have created a “bad image of the entire platform.” He noted that the new “moderation” measures to be introduced this year are aimed at transforming “Telegram from an area of criticism to one of praise.”
