This decision was confirmed by Palm Springs Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein, who told the Los Angeles Times: “The City Council is very pleased to have found a satisfactory solution to this issue, which has divided so many people within our community.”
While the statue will remain within the 1.5-acre park, the move marks the conclusion of a heated debate that saw supporters of the artwork face off against those who criticised its placement as “problematic”.
The statue is currently located at the edge of Downtown Park, with Monroe’s sculpted back and exposed underwear facing the Palm Springs Art Museum. This particular location has been a focal point of criticism from several community members, including the museum’s executive director, Louis Granchos. Granchos expressed concern about the statue’s impact on museum visitors, especially schoolchildren, who would have to see Monroe’s backside on their way to and from the museum. “Museum visitors, particularly schoolchildren, would stare at Marilyn’s backside and underwear on their way to and from the museum,” Granchos said during a debate over the statue’s placement in 2021.
The controversy over the statue’s location began in 2021, when it was reinstalled in Palm Springs after a seven-year absence. Local fashion designer Trina Turk emerged as a prominent critic, arguing that the statue’s placement was “inappropriate” and “sexist.” Turk led a campaign to relocate the statue, raising more than $115,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to support her efforts. In a post on the fundraising page, Turk wrote, “There are still many details to be worked out and a legally binding agreement to be worked out. We will not consider this closed until the statue is moved to its new location.”
Despite initial protests, the City Council approved the placement of the statue for three years starting in 2021.
