The Chief Justice stated that the court cannot play the role of opposition."

Speaking at the first recorded International Supreme Court Bar Conference held in Goa, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that the role of the Supreme Court as a people’s court should be maintained in the future, but the Chief Justice also said that Being a people’s court does not mean that we play the role of opposition in Parliament.

In this conference, the Chief Justice openly expressed his opinion on the reaction to the decisions of the Supreme Court. The CJI said that when the Supreme Court rules in favor of someone, then those people feel that the Supreme Court is doing a great job. But when the verdict comes against the same people, people criticize the court a lot. But we have no objection if the decision is criticized from a legal point of view, but the basis of the criticism should not be that the decision does not favor them. Judges have the right to make independent decisions based on the facts and evidence present in the cases.

Supreme Court is a big court but not for important people: CJI

The Supreme Court has often been accused of rushing to hear cases involving important or wealthy people. The president of the Supreme Court responded to this accusation with clear words. He said the Supreme Court has been accused of hearing cases only for important or wealthy people. It has been very easy to make such an accusation because most people did not have the chance to prove it, but since the court hearing has been held, people are starting to know that the court hears the cases of all people in all countries. He does it with the same seriousness.

The CJI further said that many times the question arises that the Supreme Court deals with even very small cases, but we must understand that the Supreme Court of India is different from the Supreme Court of the United States, Britain and Australia. It was created to solve the problems of the poor. Even today, in these changing times, many sections of society are backward. In such a situation, the role of the Supreme Court is not simply to resolve constitutional disputes. Change in society comes not only from the big problems, but also from the small issues we deal with every day.

Judge Sanjay Karol became emotional after describing a woman’s pain

Justice Sanjay Karol, a Supreme Court judge who attended the function, presented a photograph of a woman from a remote rural area. Judge Karol shared the thoughts of the people of that area and the pain that the woman was going through. In reality, that photo was captured by Judge Karol himself on his camera. The woman’s painful story was that she was forced to live in a tent outside her home during her periods. The woman was not allowed to enter the house for five days just because she was going through physical changes. Justice Karol said that this is the image of the India we live in. But our efforts should focus on reaching those people. Although in his speech Justice Karol did not reveal where he had taken this photograph, he did mention the remote backward areas of Bihar and Tripura where the judicial system has not yet reached.

Justice Sanjay Karol said the approach of our judicial system is “metrocentric”. We have to understand that India is not just Delhi or Mumbai, as guardians of the Constitution, it is our responsibility to reach out to those people who have not had access to the justice system or who do not understand that. is it justice? This is our important responsibility.
