The corporation will dig a pond in the metropolis

Kolkata. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation on Monday took an important decision to stop drainage and wastage of drinking water in the metropolis. According to information, the corporation will dig ponds for drainage of the city. To prevent wastage of water, meters will be installed at the water stands that supply water. The sewerage department of the corporation has received Rs 500 crore from the state disaster management department for this work. A high-level meeting was held in the corporation on Monday to utilize this money. Mayor Firhad Hakim, Corporation Commissioner Dhawal Jain and Municipal Council of Sewerage and Drainage Department Tarak Singh were present in this meeting. The problem of waterlogging becomes more complicated during monsoon days due to filling of ponds in the city. In case of excessive rainfall, water can flow into nearby water bodies. In such a situation, Mayor Firhad Hakim has expressed his displeasure over the filling of the reservoir several times. Tarak Singh said that dredging of the city’s canals will be done with funds from the Disaster Management Department. Many reservoirs will also be dug. Tarak Singh said that he will dig large ponds at some places in Kolkata. So that in case of heavy rains in that area, the water accumulated on the roads can be drained into the pond. As a result, there will be no water on the road. When the rain stops, the excess water will be removed from the reservoir. It has been decided to build a sluice and pumping station near Dahi Ghat at a cost of Rs 154 crore, because when the tide comes to the Ganga after the rains, the water accumulated on the roads cannot be drained through the drains. In such a situation, a large part of Kalighat is submerged. Water meters will be installed at the water booths: the corporation is considering reducing the number of roadside water booths. In this regard, Mr. Singh said that instead of installing taps (water posts) on the roads, water stands will be installed at the homes of people in the slums. He said that this decision was taken in the meeting of the joint drainage and water supply department held on Monday. He said that like the sewerage department, the corporation is preparing a digital map for the water supply department. He said that there are 3,079 slums in the metropolis. The corporation is also preparing a digital map of that slum area.
