New Delhi: Prime minister Narendra Modi On Saturday he stressed the importance of swift justice in cases of crimes against womensaying it would give them greater confidence in their security. He added that the judiciary serves as the guardian of the Constitution, saying both the Supreme Court and the judiciary have fulfilled this crucial responsibility.
The Prime Minister’s comments came amid widespread outrage over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata. He was speaking at the inaugural function of the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary at Bharat Mandapam on Friday.
“There are several laws in the country that address the issue of women’s safety. In 2019, the Fast Track Courts Act was passed, under which deposition centres were established. District monitoring committees play an important role. We need to further strengthen these committees and the faster verdicts are given on women’s safety issues, the more the process of justice delivery will be protected,” she said at the event.
She added, “Today, atrocities against women and safety of children are serious concerns for the society. Many strict laws have been enacted in the country for the safety of women, but we need to make them more active. The faster decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the more secure half of the population will be.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks came a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to him once again, asking for strict central legislation and severe punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder. The TMC chief also mentioned that she had earlier sent a letter to the Prime Minister but had not received a reply.
About the National Conference of District Judiciary
The two-day conference, organised by the Supreme Court of India, will see the participation of over 800 district judiciary members from all states and Union Territories, according to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The five working sessions will focus on key issues relating to the District Judiciary, including infrastructure, human resources, inclusive courts, judicial safety and well-being, case management, and judicial training.
The inaugural programme was attended by the Chief Justice of India, other Supreme Court Judges, Union Minister of State (Independent Officer) for Law and Justice, Attorney General of India, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and Chairman of the Bar Council of India.
President Droupadi Murmu will deliver the valedictory address on September 1, during which she will also unveil the flag and insignia of the Supreme Court, according to a press release from the apex court.
