The government is giving priority to water conservation and environment in Bihar, the Water Resources Minister discussed the major issues of the state.

Bihar News: Patna. I had a serious discussion on environment and ecology with Bihar Minister for Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Kumar Chaudhary. Present in the meeting were Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee Dr Anil Prakash Joshi (Uttarakhand) and environmental activist Pankaj Malviya. These people raised some important national and international issues with the Minister.

Dr Joshi asked the Minister that Bihar has been working seriously for the last decade for conservation of air, soil, forests and water but has not yet been able to come up with concrete figures, making it difficult to explain what contribution is being made. Measures are being taken at the government or ministerial level to improve the ecosystem. He also suggested that just as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is assessed, Gross Environmental Product (GEP) can also be assessed, using forests, air, soil and water as key parameters to be considered.

Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary expressed enthusiasm over this idea and said that perhaps Bihar needs it now too. He said that under the Jal Jeevan Hariyali Programme, efforts have been made to improve the environmental condition of the state in collaboration with water and various related departments. He also highlighted the importance of rivers, saying that besides cleanliness of rivers, attention should also be paid to their continuity because rivers have the capacity to keep themselves clean.

In this sequence, Pankaj Malviya, while presenting his views before the Minister, said that the state is moving towards better ecology due to the current efforts, especially the efforts of the government under the Jal Jeevan Hariyali Mission. He said that if the Gross Environmental Product is imagined, Bihar will be in a better position than other states because work has been done continuously here for a long time. The Minister assured that a meeting on this issue will be organised soon and all the relevant stakeholders including government departments will be invited so that further planning can be done in this direction.
