Labour and Employment Secretary Sumita Dawra chaired the seventh meeting of the task force on Friday to reinforce the report as India is keen to increase the share of women in its workforce with a focus on the development of the Care Economy.
Dawra stressed that women’s meaningful participation in the workforce is a matter of social justice and an essential economic and strategic imperative for building a vibrant, innovative and equitable society, and said the task force should take a pragmatic approach in recommending interventions that both the government and the private sector can implement to support women in entering the workforce.
According to the statement issued by the ministry after the meeting, the task force deliberated on the current status of female participation in the workforce in India, identifying key areas challengesand explore possible improvement strategies.
“Among the key discussions, the working group identified the care economy as a sector with significant potential to increase female participation in the workforce,” she said, adding that the group also discussed adopting a sector-wide approach to support decent jobs for women.
“The key strategies discussed by the task force related to improving mobility and public transport; enhancing employability; communication campaigns; support to self-employed women and those in the unorganised sector with respect to social security and health benefits, among others,” the ministry said. Further, the task force has urged industry associations to organise a series of webinars and workshops to create awareness and encourage employers to enhance female participation in economic activity. Representatives from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) and VV Giri National Labour Institute (VVGNLI) attended the task force meeting.
The task force has been asked to analyse female participation in the workforce in India and identify and provide strategic advice on the elimination barriers and the challenges women face in accessing employment.
