The ship sank about 80 kilometers from Calcutta

West Bengal: The Indian Coast Guard has successfully rescued 11 crew members of the cargo ship MV ITT Puma, which was sailing from Kolkata to Port Blair. The ship sank 70 nautical miles south of Sagar Island due to rough weather, officials said. A Coast Guard official said Monday that three crew members were still missing.

The ship sank at a distance of about 80 kilometers from Calcutta.

A Coast Guard spokesperson said that a Coast Guard personnel rescued 11 people in a coordinated operation conducted at sea overnight. The MV ITT Puma sank 70 nautical miles south of Sagar Island. He said that Coast Guard vessels Sarang and Amogh were involved in this challenging rescue operation. Besides, assistance from a Dornier aircraft was also taken. A senior Coast Guard official said that the Mumbai-registered vessel sank about 80 kilometres off Kolkata.

The Education Department has issued a notice to three, including Siraj, brother of Badshah Shahjahan Sheikh of Sandeshkhali.

Rescue operation carried out at the scene

The spokesman said the Haldia Coast Guard had received information from Sagar VTC (ship monitoring system) yesterday. The Coast Guard’s Dornier aircraft detected it at 9.30 pm and ICG ships Sarang and Amogh reached the spot at 9.45 pm and started search and rescue operations.
