Potatoes are being sold at a price of Rs 40 to Rs 60 per kg in different districts of the state. Despite many efforts, the state government has not been able to find a solution to this problem. In the meantime, however, attempts have been made to control the prices by bringing in potatoes from Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, the State Food and Consumer Welfare Department has started a new effort and decided to sell potatoes through retail outlets. For this, in the initial phase, the Food Supply Department has provided potatoes to over 95 traders of the Additional District Magistrate’s Office, Bhubaneswar. It has been decided to give three kg per consumer for Rs 100 through the retail outlets. Any consumer from every family will be able to buy this potato.
State government should control potato price by implementing ESMA: BJD
Biju Janata Dal held a press conference in Bhubaneswar on Saturday and asked the state government to control the price of potatoes. Senior BJD leader Pramila Malik said that the potato problem could last for the next 15 days. In such a situation, there is a need to control its price in the market by implementing ESMA. She alleged that the state government is not paying attention to the problems of consumers. The ministers of the state government are shirking their responsibilities by just making statements. Taking advantage of this, some greedy businessmen are busy filling their pockets. Recently, the state Food and Supplies Minister had asked traders to sell potatoes at Rs 32-35 per kg, but they have not done so.
Potatoes are imported from Uttar Pradesh
The supply of potatoes from West Bengal to Odisha has been affected for the last one month. Due to which potato warehouses have become empty in many cities of the state, including Bhubaneswar-Cuttack. In view of the potato crisis in the state, potatoes are being brought to Odisha from Uttar Pradesh. Sources said that the required quantity of potatoes did not reach the state on time. There is discontent among consumers regarding the prices of potatoes here. The price of potatoes in Odisha weighs heavily on the pockets of consumers, because this vegetable occupies an important place in most kitchens. This has affected poor and middle-class families.
