Union Minister S. Jaishankar handed over the Letter of Intent (LoI) to the university representatives at an event in New Delhi, titled “Internationalisation of Education under NEP 2020: Establishment of a Foreign University in India”.
“I am pleased to attend the presentation of the Letter of Intent to the University of Southampton, which will establish a campus in India under the NEP 2020,” the Minister said.
“This reflects both the vision of elevating our educational standards to the highest global levels and the fulfilment of the educational pillar of India-UK cooperation. We are confident that these efforts will further prepare our youth for the world and foster a spirit of global understanding and cooperation,” he added.
In 2023, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced the Regulations for the establishment and operation of campuses of foreign higher education institutions in India. The UGC approved the establishment of the UoS campus based on a proposal submitted for a branch campus in Gurugram.
Courses offered
The university, which is ranked among the top 100 in the world, will offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from July 2025.
In its first three years, it will offer courses including Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Business Administration, Accounting and Finance, Economics and Master of Science in International Management and Finance.
Future additions will include programs in Software Engineering, Creative Computing, Economics and Law.
UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar said: “The degrees awarded by the Indian campus of the University of Southampton will be the same as those of the host university. The programmes offered will meet the same academic and quality standards.”
Professor Andrew Atherton, Vice-President, International, University of Southampton, highlighted the campus’ role in developing globally competitive graduates. He noted that “the UoS Delhi campus will be a comprehensive international hub that will contribute to India’s growing knowledge economy through its world-class education and research programmes.”
In a post on X, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that this initiative is a step towards achieving the goal of ‘internationalisation at home’ as envisaged in the NEP 2020. India, as ‘Vishwa-Bandhu’, is committed to fulfilling its global responsibilities and building a brighter future for education, innovation and progress, he said.
“We are glad that more and more world-renowned higher education institutions are showing keen interest in multifaceted collaborations with top Indian institutions as well as in harnessing India’s potential as a global education and talent hub of the future,” the Minister said.
“The establishment of foreign university campuses in India and Indian higher education institutions abroad is not only aimed at expanding educational opportunities but at creating a vibrant ecosystem of research, knowledge sharing and global collaboration. Educational institutions in all countries have a responsibility to develop ‘global citizens’ with global values who can provide solutions to global challenges,” he added.
